Colour and texture play a part in creating warmth in our spaces. As an autumn and spring colour personality, I naturally gravitate towards rich colours, which are seen throughout my designs. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to share some of my projects with you that ooze the essence of cosy and how to implement this in your own home. Read on to get inspired...
1 . Incorporate Autumnal Tones
A super simple way to update your space is to add some orange and red florals into your room. This works particularly well in hallways for a cosy entrance, like in my project at Acton House, as shown below.

If you have an unused fireplace, why not use this space to house some autumnal florals? In one of my projects, I used neutral dried plants to create a rustic and cosy space where the fireplace has been taken out.

2. Bring in fluffy rugs
One of my favourite ways to add warmth to a space is to swap my rugs throughout the seasons. In autumn and winter, there's nothing more cosy than a fluffy, patterned rug to complement the space. Here's my living room below, which shows how I upgraded my space with an area rug to go with my existing decor.

In one of my projects, I designed a conservatory room. I used texture and pattern to make it cosy. Furthermore, the purple fluffy rug adds a touch of warmth against the tile flooring during autumn and winter.

3. Layer your sofa with cushions
Textiles such as cushions, throws, curtains, and bedding are your best friends during autumn and winter. Layering cushions, throws, and duvets/comforters is a best practice for creating a cosy home.
In my project below, I used various autumnal colours to make this large corner sofa feel inviting and snug. Cushion colours that are great for the colder months include burnt orange, rich teal and emerald, mustard yellow, green and grey.

4. Create a reading nook
In my opinion, reading nooks are made for autumn and winter - there's nothing more heartwarming than a cuppa and a book when it's cold outside. Plus, this is a simple way to update your living room! If you have an empty alcove or space that you feel is missing something, consider investing in an armchair or love seat. Or if you're on a budget, play around with your furniture layout to reinvent your space for free!
In a recent design project, 'Dale Garth', I created a cosy nook by a showstopping tiled fireplace as a way to break up the living room area. Positioning seating like this also creates a social setting.

5. Layer bedding to keep toasty
The bedroom is the cosiest room in the home all year round, but it shouldn't get overlooked in autumn and winter. Little updates to your room can make all the difference. Ensuring you have blackout curtains to layered bedding, and upgrading your lighting are just some ways to elevate your home.
In one of my projects, I renovated a bedroom in a barn conversion, and comfort was key to making the space feel relaxing. The bed was a focal point of the room, I ensured it looked and felt cosy by layering duvets, throws and cushions in a mix of purple, pink and cream colours.

My top tip: choose a main colour for your bedding, then use muted versions of the colour along with a neutral (like white, grey or black) for the perfect layering combination.

6. Switch to ambient lighting
Instead of using your main light in a room, switch to using wall lights, pendant and floor lamps so your room still gets light, but it's more focused and low-key. Yellow and tinted lighting in the evenings is better for rest, as you're preparing your body for sleep. Consider LED coloured lights when watching TV or sconces with warm or tinted bulbs to set the mood.
In my project below, I used task lighting in the space to create the option of having pockets of light in the right spaces (above the sofa and bookcases for subdued lighting options).

7. Updating your artwork
Changing up artwork can make a huge difference to how your space feels. If you've got an accent wall or gallery wall in your space, swapping out some summery and colourful pieces with some darker, moodier art can prep your home for the cosiness of autumn and winter.

This gorgeous artwork in a living project is the perfect example of an autumnal and wintery print that feels cosy but also inspiring and bold. Paired with ambient lighting, this space is now cosy and cocooned because of the rich colours used in the print.
