1. Sunday Soul by Coat Paints – Warm Taupe

I love using taupe in my projects, as it's a warm, earthy neutral that works well in lots of different spaces. It can refreshen up a space as well as making it feel cosy. For this project, I used Sunday Stroll by COAT paint. This shade added depth and elegance to the room, complementing the panelling. It also served as a canvas to introduce rich colours, which contrast with this warm neutral. Check out my mood board for this project below!

Taupe through the years
Taupe (which comes from the French word for "mole") first appeared in England in the early 19th century (Snargl). Its understated elegance made it a staple in Victorian fashion and interiors. Making it a great choice for period homes. Taupe is a balance of warmth and neutrality, making it a timeless choice for your home.
Why it's timeless: Taupe's adaptability allows it to complement both traditional and contemporary spaces, providing a neutral backdrop that enhances other design elements.
2. Tobacconist – Rich Dark Green

I used Tobacconist by COAT (a dark green) on the walls in a dining room project to create a cosy space that reflects nature. A great tip for using dark green is to pair it with dark wood and gold to create warmth. Painting your ceiling a dark colour can make your space feel snug and cocooned, which makes for a lovely entertaining space. Check out my mood board for this project, below!

Dark green through the years
In the 1800s, a rich shade called Scheele’s Green was hugely popular in wallpapers and fashion, but it unknowingly contained arsenic. Thankfully, modern paints are perfectly safe, and the love for dark green continued into the Arts and Crafts era with William Morris’s leafy patterns. It’s a colour that’s always felt connected to nature and calm, which is why it’s still trending in interiors today.
Why it's timeless: Dark green brings a sense of the outdoors into your home, which creates a restful and grounding atmosphere that will be timeless, despite current trends. (Also, florals will never die out!)
3. Bright White

Kitchens are one of those spaces that get a new look only every so often, therefore, it’s important to ensure this space has a timeless scheme. When designing this kitchen, I knew that white would work well as it’s a large open space that should feel airy and fresh. I used Screenshot by COAT, which is a brilliant white that can help make a space feel brighter.
Bright white through the years
White has long been a symbol of purity and calm, from ancient Roman togas representing peace, to the clean lines of modernist architecture in the 1920s Bauhaus movement. This colour has been used throughout history to reflect light, create space and keep spaces looking fresh. That’s why a bright white still feels timeless and versatile today.
Why it's timeless: Bright white will always be popular, whether it’s to give a space an instant refresh or to serve as an accent or trim colour for a contrasting look. Bright while is timeless in many rooms, but my favourite spaces to use it are in kitchens and living rooms.
4. Dark Chalky Blue

This playful shade of blue is rich in tone, but also uplifting, and works well with other rich colours like red, green and orange. In this hallway project, I used The Drink by COAT paints, a lovely chalky blue. This colour worked beautifully with this gorgeous wallpaper to add visual interest to a hallway. It's also a classic choice for years to come. See my mood board for this project below!

Blue through the years
Blue has been cherished since ancient times, with Egyptian blue being the first synthetic pigment created around 2600 BCE (and it’s still ever popular today!). Deep, chalky blue evokes a sense of serenity and sophistication, reminiscent of the hues found in classical art and architecture.
Why it's timeless: Dark blue's association with depth and relaxation makes it a reliable choice for adding richness and character to interiors. I particularly love using blue to create timeless schemes in hallways as they have the most traffic flow, but never get boring to look at (in my humble opinion).
5. Creamy Beige

I often get asked about what neutral colours to use in spaces and time and time again, I always go back to a creamy beige. You can’t go wrong with this colour as it’s easy on the eye, works well in low-lit rooms and is the perfect shade to use as a base. For this project, I wanted to create the illusion of taller ceilings and to do this, I painted my ceiling and walls with Duvet Day by COAT paint. By colour drenching a quarter of the top of the walls the same as the ceiling, it gave the effect of taller walls - how cool is that?
Beige through the years
Did you know…? Beige gained popularity in the 1950s, reflecting a desire for calm and comfort in post-war homes. Its warm, neutral tone provides a soothing backdrop that complements a variety of colour schemes and styles. It’s still ever-popular now, with many different shades and levels of creaminess to create a cosy home.
Why it's timeless: Beige is a perfect colour that sits somewhere between white and grey on the neutral scale. It is often considered a more cosy and warming colour than white and grey, and is a great choice for subtle contrast. I love incorporating beige into a lot of my projects as it’s such a versatile colour.
Conclusion
Trends may come and go, but these paint colours prove that good design never goes out of style. Each colour has a story to tell, from ancient times to modern-day uses, and now, you have the list to create your own vibe. Whether you’re after a bold update or a calm refresh, these timeless hues are here to stay.
